On May 16, Christie’s presents Important American Paintings, Drawings & Sculpture. The Spring Americana art sale features 100 lots that span a multitude of genres, including Impressionism, Modernism, 19th Century, and Illustration.
Leading the sale is Fitz Henry Lane’s (1804-1865), Gloucester, Stage Fort Beach, painted in 1849; a seminal painting which marked the birth of the artist’s mature style, heralding a new direction for American Art in the mid-19th century. Lane was a close follower of luminism, which some deem as the aesthetic counterpart to the Transcendentalist theories of Ralph Waldo Emerson and David Thoreau. The sale also includes works by Oscar Bluemner, Georgia O’Keefe, Norman Rockwell and Maxfield Parish. Complete details available at Christie’s website.
Many auction houses hold previews and sales coordinated with the shows of Americana Week. Auctions these days cater as much to the consumer as they do to the wholesale market. You can head to auctions to browse as you would in a museum, compare works and estimates and prepare a winning bid. We’ll post additional information on the auctions of Americana Week as it becomes available.
